What’s your homepage’s purpose?
Ready to give your homepage some serious oomph? Let’s dive in and figure out what makes it tick! Your homepage isn’t just a pretty face – it’s the powerhouse of your website, working hard to achieve your business goals and keep your visitors happy.
Set clear objectives
First things first, you need to get crystal clear on what you want your homepage to achieve. It’s like setting the GPS for their digital journey – without a destination, they’ll just be driving in circles! Think about what actions you want your visitors to take before they wave goodbye to your site. Maybe you’re after more subscribers, you want to boost those sales numbers, or you need them to book in a call with you.
For example, if you’re keen to get your brand noticed, your homepage goal could be to ramp up engagement with your brand content. Or if you’re on the hunt for more leads, you might focus on driving people to your contact form or call booking functionality. Always make sure your website goals align to all those bigger business objectives.
Balancing needs (it’s not a competition guys!)
Here’s where it gets really interesting – you’ve got to juggle your own business goals with what your users actually want and need. It’s like being a digital tightrope walker!
Start by getting to know your target audience inside out. Build a user persona by asking the right questions: What gets them excited? What makes them tick? How do they search the web? What challenges are they facing? Once you’ve got these pieces of the puzzle, you can create content and services that really speak to them and solve their problems.
Remember, your website isn’t for everyone – and that’s okay! You’re aiming to attract the right audience, not every Tom, Dick, and Harry on the internet. By understanding your users’ needs and aligning them with your business goals, you’ll create a homepage that’s not just a pretty face, but a hardworking member of your team.
Let’s talk content – what to include in your homepage
The Goldilocks Dilemma… Make sure the amount you include is ‘just right’
So how much content should there actually be on your website? Too little and there’s not enough to engage your visitor – too much and they’ll be overwhelmed and seek out someone who gives them a clearer (and maybe more concise) package. Getting the balance right is so important to keep that person on your site and getting them to take the action you need them to take.
The problem with insufficent content
Not including enough copy is the most common problem I find with my client’s content when they deliver it to me. More often than not their homepage copy simply doesn’t have enough content to to show users what the their business or products are all about.
You website may well be the first opportunity you have to introduce yourself to a new client or customer so its crucial to make it informational and helpful for viewers to understand your brand and what you have to offer.
I often tell my clients to imagine that the homepage of their website is an advertisement or signpost for the rest of the pages of the website. For instance – you might use one section of content to take the time to quickly introduce yourself or your business and then link to your about page with a “Learn More” button. Likewise you could summarise your key services and then link to your services page where they get a more comprehensive overview. If you have a blog – include a feed to the latest posts… you get the idea!
If you do this with the most important top-level pages of your website, the homepage becomes a starting point for your visitors. If you can effectively show them the key aspects of your business with tantalising headings and stimulating content then you have a much better chance of them continuing their journey through your site – and ultimately (hopefully) converting to a lead or a customer.
What to include ‘Above the Fold’
We’ve establised that the homepage is the most important page of your site, but even more important is the content included in the “above the fold” section.
The phrase ‘Above the Fold’ dates back to the days of printing where the upper half of the front page of a newspaper is where the MOST important news story is located.
In webby terms it’s the first section that is seen when landing on the page without having scrolled. The above the folder section is very important because it feeds into people judging a book by its cover, so its something you want to get right!
Answer three key questions
Your above the fold section should answer 3 key questions about your business without having people scour through your content to work them out for themselves:
- Who are you?
- What do you do?
- How can you help me?
Who are you?
“Who are you” is more often than not answered at the very top of your page – where your brand logo should be proud and present! This does the perfect job of letting users know who you are so make sure your logo is clear, has the name of your brand in it, and of course visually matches the business you want to portray (if you’re not sure your branding matches your business anymore then maybe its time for a rebrand – but that’s a subject for another day!).
What do you do?
What services or products you offer. This is so IMPORTANT – when someone lands on your website they need to know if you offer what they’re looking for right away. A quick summary of this should be included in your main header.
How can you help me?
Or in more fancy marketing speak – what’s your value proposition? This is where you can get even more specific! “How can you help me” is all about your brand’s USP. What’s unique about you or your product that goes beyond the norm.
This is your chance to tell visitors why they should choose you over the competition. It’s not just about what you do – it’s about the exact solution you provide and the promise of value you’re making.
Your value prop should be like your fingerprint – totally unique to you. If it matches your competitors’, something’s gone wrong. So, how do you craft a value proposition that’s as unique as you are?
Start by brainstorming. Make a big list of all your benefits, then look for connections between them. It’s like putting together a puzzle – you want to find the pieces that fit together perfectly to create your own unique picture.
Here’s a simple formula to get you started: We help (X) do (Y) by doing (Z).
Next, sprinkle in some power words. Words like “exclusive,” “secret,” or “ultimate” can add some serious va va voom to your headline. They’re like the secret sauce that makes your headline irresistible.
Remember, your value proposition isn’t just about you – it’s about how your customers define your value . So put on your customer hat and think about how your product or service makes their lives better.
Take your customer or client on a journey…
So homepages should have lots of juicy content – they should be informational and include references to your top-level pages. Structure your page to build a customer journey by ordering those pieces of content into an effectibe path that funnels users to where you want them to go.
An example of an effective content pyramid might be:
- Hero section: Above the fold content that answers your three key questions providing an memorable snapshot of what you do.
- Services: Include a snapshot of the services or products that you offer
- About: A paragraph (or two) about you or your business – you might want to include an insight into your values and goals.
- Service Upsell: Some content to show or explain why your services / products are the BEST
- Service Examples: Can you show examples of your work?
- Testimonials: Customers don’t want to just take your word for how great you are – show them that you’re tried and tested and truly EXCELLENT at what you do.
- Contact: A simple Call-To-Action to contact you (or subscribe to your list, or set up a call).
If you follow that plan you’ve educated a potential customer from knowing zip all about you to:
- Know what you do, and how you do it
- Know about your services
- Know about you as a brand
- Understand that your services are FABULOUS with proof (testimonials baby!)
- And finally, they have the opportunity to take action and enter in to the wonderful world of you!
But what about SEO?
Incorporating Keywords Naturally
Now, let’s sprinkle in some SEO magic! Your homepage should employ a SEO strategy. Keywords are crucial for getting found online, but don’t go overboard. You’re writing for humans, not robots.
Here’s the golden rule: use your primary keyword once every 100-150 words. So if you’re writing a 1000-word homepage, aim to use it about 7-10 times. But remember, natural is the name of the game here!
Don’t forget about your secondary and additional keywords too. Aim for 3-8 keywords in total, depending on your content length. And here’s a pro tip: use your primary keyword in your headline and within the first paragraph if you can. It’s like giving Google a big, flashing sign that says “Hey, this is what we’re all about!”
Remember, your homepage copy should be a perfect blend of creativity, clarity, and SEO smarts. So go forth and craft copy that’ll make your visitors say “Wow, this is exactly what I’ve been looking for!”
Lets talk design!
So that’s content… but i’m a designer – so as a bonus here are my top homepage design tips to make your page really stand out!
Create a compelling visual story
Ready to give your homepage some serious love? Let’s dive into the art of creating a visual story that’ll make your visitors’ jaws drop!
Hero section design
Your hero section is like the front door to your digital home – it’s got to be a showstopper! This is the first thing your visitors see, so it needs to pack a punch. Think of it as your website’s red carpet moment.
To create a hero section that truly shines, you’ll want to focus on a few key elements:
- Bold Typography: Use eye-catching fonts that scream “Look at me!” but make sure they’re still easy to read.
- Compelling Visuals: Whether it’s a stunning photo, a slick video, or some funky graphics, make it pop!
- Clear Call-to-Action: Don’t leave your visitors hanging – tell them exactly what you want them to do next.
Remember, your hero section isn’t just about looking pretty – it’s about telling your brand’s story in a split second. So make every pixel count!
Imagery and Iconography
Now, let’s talk about dressing up your homepage with some eye-candy. Images and icons are like the accessories of your website – they can make or break your look.
When it comes to images, quality is key. No one wants to see grainy, pixelated photos on your site. It’s like turning up to a fancy dinner in your pyjamas – not a good look! Opt for unpixelated images that really showcase what you’re all about.
And don’t forget about icons! These little visual helpers can break up text, guide your visitors’ eyes, and add a touch of personality to your site. They’re like the sprinkles on top of your website sundae – small but mighty! They also give you more of an opportunity to show your brand’s unique personality – so take full examples (FYI my branding packages include icon design – so you know you’ll be truly unique!)
Here’s a quick checklist for your imagery and iconography:
- Use relevant images that align with your brand
- Optimise your images for fast loading times
- Choose icons that complement your overall design
- Use icons to highlight key features or services
Colour Psychology
Now, let’s add some colour to the mix! Colour isn’t just about making things look pretty – it’s a powerful tool that can influence how your visitors feel and act.
Did you know that colours can actually drive sales? It’s true! They tap into our subconscious emotions and can generate optimal responses. So, choosing your colour scheme isn’t just about picking your favourites – it’s about strategic thinking.
Here’s a quick colour cheat sheet:
- Red: Great for grabbing attention and creating urgency
- Blue: Perfect for building trust and professionalism
- Green: Ideal for creating an organic, natural feel
- Purple: Adds a touch of luxury and sophistication
- Yellow: Brings energy and optimism to your design
Remember, the key is to choose colours that not only look good together but also align with your brand personality and goals. It’s like putting together the perfect outfit – everything needs to work in harmony!
So there you have it, folks! With a killer hero section, spot-on imagery and iconography, and a colour scheme that packs a psychological punch, you’ll be well on your way to creating a homepage that’s not just a pretty face, but a hardworking member of your team. Now go forth and create something fabulous!
